RN’s Failure in Insulin Administration Training Led to Critical Incident
Quality patient care is not only the responsibility of registered nurses but they also have to make sure that unlicensed house staff is adequately trained for their responsibilities. This can be tough when things are going wrong and it's hard to know who's responsible for what happened. In such situations, a nurse attorney can help in guiding and defending nurses. The case highlighted below emphasizes the importance of legal expertise when dealing with accusations of professional negligence.
At the time of the incident, she was employed as an RN with a home and community service provider in Carrollton, Texas, and had been in that position for eleven (11) months.
On or about September 19, 2021, while employed as an RN with a home and community service provider in Carrollton, Texas, the RN failed to train each of the unlicensed house staff how to perform the delegated task of sliding scale insulin administration, interpreting sliding scale insulin orders and determining the correct dose of insulin to administer to a patient. Subsequently, the unlicensed house staff administered more insulin than what was ordered based on the sliding scale and the patient's blood glucose readings from September 20, 2021, through September 23, 2021. On September 23, 2021, the patient became unresponsive and was taken to the emergency room. RN's conduct placed the patient at risk for complications caused by inaccurate and/or excessive insulin administration.
The above action constitutes grounds for disciplinary action in accordance with Section 301.452(b)(10)&(13) Texas Occupations Code and is a violation of 22 TEX ADMIN. CODE §217.11(1)(A),(1)(B),(1)(M),(1)(S)&(1)(U) and 22 TEX. ADMIN. CODE §217.12 (1)(A),(1)(B),(1)(D)&(4).
However, the RN failed to consult with an experienced nurse attorney. As a result, she lost the case due to insufficient evidence to prove her innocence. Consequently, the Texas Board of Nursing placed her RN license under disciplinary action.
Do not be stressed or anxious if you find yourself in a similar situation as that of the RN mentioned above. All you need to do is to find the right nurse defense attorney who can help you out. Equip yourself with the knowledge and expertise you need for a successful outcome by consulting a knowledgeable and experienced Texas nurse defense attorney.
