RN Prescribed Medications Without Proper Patient Assessment
RN Prescribed Medications Without Proper Patient Assessment
Prescribing medications is a critical aspect of advanced nursing practice, requiring a comprehensive understanding of patient's health conditions and thorough assessments to ensure safe and effective care. In situations where nursing practitioners face allegations related to prescription practices, legal guidance becomes crucial, and a nurse attorney can play a pivotal role in providing necessary support. They advocate for the nurse's rights throughout investigations and legal proceedings, ensuring fair treatment and effective representation.
Incident: Prescribing Medications Without Proper Patient Assessment
In the summer of 2021, while employed as an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner at a medical facility in Longview, Texas, the RN prescribed Metronidazole and Fluconazole to a patient, who was not an established patient, without performing and/or documenting a physical assessment. RN's conduct resulted in an inaccurate, incomplete medical record and was likely to injure the patient in that subsequent caregivers would not have accurate and complete information on which to base their care decisions.
In response to the above incident, the RN stated she checked carefully with the pharmacist to verify that the medication had been received. RN stated there is no evidence that the medication caused any damage nor is there any evidence that there was any intention for the medication to be administered without a careful assessment.
The above action constitutes grounds for disciplinary action based on the Nursing Practice Act. However, without valid evidence to defend her side of the story, the RN lost the case. Furthermore, the RN failed to hire a Texas nurse attorney to help her with her case. Because of this, the Texas Board of Nursing disciplined the RN’s license.
